
SSX XL
SSXXL was my first project for Vancouver Film School's Game Design program as well as my first project as a Game Designer! I was responsible for the role of Technical Designer, UI Designer, as well as a Project Manager.

Seal Growth
Players are able to press down on the left mouse button to hold Sealking's mouth open. While opened, the player may eat any penguin they run into.
Eating penguins grants the player growth which does the following:

Increase their model size
-
Increase their velocity
-
Is able to break through more obstacles
TRICKS
Player's can fly off ramps to play a quick-time event. This consists of a minigame to press the corresponding face button based on the position indicated on the UI.
While failure grants the player nothing, success grants the player the following:

A trick animation
-
A temporary boost in velocity once the player has landed back onto the ground
Breakables
Depending on the player's size (level), running into these object will break them. Example: If the player is level 2, they may break through level 2 AND level 1 obstacles.
Level 2: Snowman
Level 3: Inuksuk
Level 4: Ice Wall
Team Management
Along with being a designer for SSX XL, I also played the role of a Project Manager. During my role as a Project Manager, I made it my goal to prioritize my team's wellbeing while maintaining our milestone deliverables.
To practice this, I implemented the following:

Consistent daily stand-ups in the scrum format

Bi-weekly 1 on 1s, primarily to check in on mental health and feedback

Use of task trackers such as Trello and Microsoft Excel

A shared calendar for all team activities and all recorded member outside appointments to create meetings that best suit everyone

Consistent weekly design meetings that primarily updates the team on our phase of the project, what our future deliverables are and what is priority.

Consistent focused department meetings to take the deliverables discussed in the design meetings, grab estimates, record them on the task trackers and further specify what each deliverable means.
